Meet Nariel Hitosis-Vizcarra, the plant nursery supervisor of the SVD Laudato Si’ Farm.
His remarkable journey towards being a dedicated and passionate farmer reflects resiliency, ingenuity, and strength, and his contributions to the SVD Farm and the agricultural sector are nothing short of inspiring.
Nariel's story begins in 2016 when he worked as a construction worker, a career choice that was far removed from the world of agriculture. During this time, he faced a pause in his education, as he had to discontinue his high school studies. This period left him disheartened and without a clear sense of purpose.
In 2019, significant changes occurred in Nariel's life as he started a family, becoming a parent. It was during this period that Nariel began to rekindle his passion for learning and developed a genuine interest in nature.
Nariel's first foray into agriculture came in 2018 when a cousin offered him the opportunity to work at Old Kano's Farm in Lalaan. Initially, he saw this as an "extra-extra" endeavor, but little did he know that this experience would become the catalyst for a profound transformation in his life.
In 2019, Nariel's farm work transitioned from occasional assistance to a regular commitment, and eventually, he was joined by his family in this endeavor. He played a crucial role as a backup farmer, supporting the planting and weeding efforts on the farm. This marked the beginning of his hands-on involvement in agriculture.
In the same year, he took on new responsibilities that showcased his dedication to agriculture. He became involved in the delivery of vegetables to local hotels, handling a variety of crops like tatsuy, kale, lettuce, and herbs.
Nariel continued to work diligently throughout 2020 and 2021. As time went by, his love for farming deepened, and he realized the potential of agriculture as a sustainable and noble pursuit.

In October 2021, Nariel joined the SVD Farm, in October 2021. His commitment to farming evolved as he transitioned into a regular farmer at the Farm by July 2022.
In 2021, Nariel's responsibilities at SVD Farm primarily involved working in open fields where he cultivated leafy greens and other crops. His tasks included preparing the fields for planting and actively participating in the planting process. He was willing to assist in planting whenever there was a shortage of seedlings, demonstrating his flexibility and resourcefulness as a farmer.
Dedicated to expanding his knowledge and skills in agriculture, Bariel became an agricultural apprentice for one year. During this period, he focused on learning the intricacies of greenhouse nursery operations, working closely with an experienced mentor, Jan Rey Gabriel. This apprenticeship provided Nariel with invaluable hands-on experience and expertise in greenhouse nursery management, a crucial aspect of modern agriculture. Under the guidance of Kuya Jan Rey, he gained insights into plant propagation, nursery management techniques, and the application of advanced agricultural technology.

Nariel's role extended beyond mere seedling cultivation; he was also entrusted with the responsibility of transplanting these healthy young plants from the nursery to the open field. His initiative and commitment were evident as he conducted fertilizer mixture experiments to enhance the transplanting process.
