News—SVD Farm conducts blessing for St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo

Tagaytay City—Within the SVD Laudato Si' Farm lies a hidden gem that resonates with the spirit of St. Peter, the fisherman apostle. This precious gem, known as the St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo, stands as a testament to coexistence between nature and spirituality. It is a place of tranquility, a space for reflection and rejuvenation, and a tribute to the teachings of the Earth's custodianship.

Last August 20, 2022, the blessing of this haven was conducted by Rev. Fr. Atilano Corcuera, Jr., SVD. The blessing also served as the structure’s formal opening to the public.

Read on to know more about the St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo.

The naming of the structure, the St. Peter Fishpond, pays homage to the apostle St. Peter, who was not only a faithful disciple of Jesus but also a skilled fisherman by trade. This connection is a powerful reminder of the harmony between human activity and the natural world. Just as St. Peter cast his net into the waters to provide sustenance, so does this fishpond serve as a symbol of sustenance, not only for the body but also for the soul.

The inspiration for the structure was born from the visionary minds of Rev. Fr. Samuel “Sam” Naceno-Agcaracar, SVD, Executive Director of the SVD Farm and Rector of the SVD-Tagaytay Community, and Bro. Mark N. Paglicawan, SVD.

The St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo embodies the essence of the SVD Farm's mission. It stands as a haven of peace and restoration, inviting all who enter to reconnect with nature, to find solace in the act of fishing, and to reflect upon the interconnectedness of all life. In the gentle ripples of the water, one can hear the whispers of Laudato Si'—a call to cherish and protect “our common home.”

The main purpose of the St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo is to be a welcoming shelter for a space of recollection, a venue for day retreats, and a gathering point for those seeking solace.

The gazebo can accommodate 120 to 150 individuals for day recollections and other spiritual activities for large groups. Its graceful architecture features an open-air design, offering a seamless connection to nature's embrace.

The gazebo stands as a place of tranquility and spiritual nourishment and a sacred space for day recollections and introspective journeys for diverse groups seeking solace and renewal. The gazebo's aura of serenity serves as the perfect conduit for contemplation, fostering connections with the divine, with others, and with the Earth itself.

Beyond its role as a sanctuary of introspection, the gazebo emerges as the vibrant example of the Farm's communal endeavors. This versatile space, with its capacity to gather and accommodate, becomes the beating heart of collaborative initiatives. The gazebo has been and continues to be the assembly place for many of the Farm’s activities such as tree-planting.

The surrounding landscape of the gazebo is also a showcase of the beauty of God’s creation. The lush greenery, comprising native trees such as yakal, ipil-ipil, and kamagong, creates an inviting ambiance. The openness of the space also allows sunlight and fresh air to provide refreshment for guests.

The fishpond of the St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo is home to a thriving community of tilapia. These fish, initially introduced as fingerlings from the Department of Agriculture Region 4A (DA-4A), have grown and flourished despite early setbacks. The fishpond, once a modest mini-pond adjacent to the Farm’s lettuce greenhouse, has now become a sanctuary for learning and joy.

Every aspect of the fishpond experience has been meticulously curated. The Farm’s personnel conducts regular replacement of the water of the fishpond to ensure the well-being of the fish. A protective net also shields the water from the sun, maintaining its pristine condition and avoiding the growth of moss.

Feeding and catching fish at the fishpond is not just a recreational activity; it is a profound connection with nature. The act of fishing, whether it results in small catches or the joy of catch-and-release, brings smiles to the faces of guests, young and old alike. For guests who persevere in their efforts, their patience is rewarded with the thrill of capturing fish.

In a unique initiative known as "Ituro Mo, Luto Ko," visitors can handpick fish from aquariums at Oies Kitchen and Kitchenette, after which our kitchen staff will cook their selections into delectable dishes. This sustainable approach ensures that no fish goes to waste, reflecting the Farm's commitment to responsible stewardship.

The journey of the St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo began on March 21, 2022, with the signing of the plans for its construction. Spearheaded by contractor Mr. Joey Malamog, the project was nurtured by the careful attention of Fr. Sam and Rev. Fr. Ricardo "Jhon" B. Crisostomo Jr., SVD, General Manager of the SVD Farm, as well as the managers of the various departments of the Farm.

As the development progressed, the structure took on an even deeper significance. The generous donation of the small waterfall and the statue of the Blessed Mary beside the St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo underscored the interconnectedness of faith and the environment.

Finally, months of planning culminated in the development of the St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo. On August 20, 2022, the blessing of the location was led by Rev. Fr. Atilano Corcuera, Jr., SVD, which also served as its formal opening to the public.

This auspicious occasion was further illuminated by the celebration of the Holy Mass for the 40th wedding anniversary of the sponsors of the St. Peter Fishpond and Gazebo, Mr. Vic and Corito Lim, whose unwavering support brought this dream to life.
